Relationships Between Shots

In the first half of the clip, Nick and Amy are at a book release dinner. She is surrounded by reporters asking about her new book, which cuts short when Nick intervenes and proposes to her. In this scene, there is low key lighting and a yellow color that is cast upon them. Since the lighting makes the shot appear more hazy, the scene feels intimate and personal. Yellow is a color that symbolizes joy and happiness and it makes sense that this color is used because their proposal is a happy moment for them. The camera is consistently at a medium shot, just close enough to feel as if you're sitting at the table with them and you're apart of the moment. As Nick makes his speech about Amy, the camera follows the 180 degree rule and insures that their eye lines match when going back and forth between him and Amy speaking. The editing is done smoothly, to fit the ambience, as if this is apart of a dream. There is soft mumbling in the background and angelic piano music playing that perfectly sets the mood for something magical about to happen. But once Nick proposes and they both lean in to kiss, the shot quickly comes to a halt and changes to the scene where the police are swapping his mouth for his DNA. This creates a graphic match and highlights how much has changed between the moments he had before with Amy and the moment he has to go through now because of her.
